Sometimes, even for those of us who are very familiar with the alphabet itself, an alphabet book can teach us new things. A surprising example of this for me was An ABC of Flowers by Jutta Hilpuesch, where I first heard of the Kalanchoe plant!
A Kalanchoe is a flowering succulant and apparently most of the 125 or so varieties of them are from Africa and Madigascar. They are supposed to be great houseplants. Probably the most interesting thing that I learned about this plant after discovering it in this alphabet book is that it was one of the first plants to go to space – on a Russian space station in 1971!
The plant is very pretty and I love the little flower clusters. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen one in real life or not, but I will definitely keep an eye out for these in the future!
